Teeth Fake Volumetric Rendering
Advanced hybrid PBR rendering pipeline for photorealistic dental visualization with custom light transport algorithms for smooth enamel-dentine transitions.
Client Request
Client required the most realistic rendering possible, preferably while avoiding volumetric techniques. At the same time, rendering had to be more advanced than simple SSSS (Subsurface Scattering). A key requirement was achieving smooth transition between enamel and dentine for photorealistic dental visualization.
Problems and Challenges
Legacy Pipeline Issues
No PBR rendering at all. Bad legacy pipeline design on SharpDX with no shader hot reload capabilities.
Multiple Solution Iterations
Had to rewrite the solution multiple times while testing different approaches. Initially utilized intersection spline for smooth enamel-dentine transition, processed and blurred transition line on compute shader, but fell back to imaginary intersection plane for better light scattering prediction.

OIT Pipeline Compatibility
Had to modify OIT (Order Independent Transparency) pipeline for compatibility with transparency and color computation requirements.
Our Solution
Hybrid PBR Pipeline
Created a new production-grade hybrid PBR (Physically Based Rendering) pipeline from scratch, replacing the legacy SharpDX system.
Custom Light Transport Algorithm
Developed custom algorithms to mimic realistic light transport through tooth surface materials.
Smooth Material Transitions
Ensured seamless visual transition between dentine and enamel using advanced intersection plane techniques.
Advanced Transparency
Modified OIT pipeline for enhanced transparency and color computation compatibility.

Final result: Photorealistic dental rendering with smooth enamel-dentine transitions
